LiDAR vs photogrammetry: when to use each

LiDAR and photogrammetry are both popular 3D scanning technologies used in surveying, construction, engineering, and building inspections.

LiDAR uses laser pulses to capture highly accurate measurements and is ideal for complex structures, interiors, low-light environments, and projects where precise geometry is essential.

Photogrammetry uses overlapping photographs to create 3D models and is well suited to drone surveys, roof inspections, façades, construction progress, and large outdoor areas.

Choose LiDAR when accuracy and detailed measurements are the priority. Choose photogrammetry when visual detail, site coverage, and cost efficiency are more important.

For many building and surveying projects, combining LiDAR and photogrammetry provides the best balance of accuracy and visual detail.
